Tonight, Keith Olbermann unleashed what may well have been his angriest, most blistering Special Comment yet, aimed squarely at his favorite target: President Bush. Olbermann was responding to Bush's claim that he had given up golf in honor of the Iraq war — and his assertion that a Democratic president withdrawing from Iraq would "eventually lead to another attack on the United States" — a statement Olbermann called "ludicrous, infuriating, holier-than-thou and most importantly bone-headedly wrong."
You gotta see this. Wow!
I thought Keith was gonna spit all over the camera. I loved it though. He is the only one saying these things in this way.
I think it's valid to express the anger over what has been done to this country under Bush's rule.
I think it's valid to express the anger over what has been done to this country under Bush's rule.
... with the Democrats' stamp of approval every step of the way.
Thank you for that seed. Keith is my favorite and it is nice for him to express how 78 percent of the country feels. I am curious about the 20 percent that still support Bush.? They do not live on the same planet I do. I would guess like they are the ones who want tax cuts for the wealthy made permanent. Tell it like it is Keith!
... with the Democrats' stamp of approval every step of the way.
Yessiree!
... with the Democrats' stamp of approval every step of the way.
... and also with the people's approval every step of the way!!
Adam Becker - c'mon, you can't pretend you weren't aware of the HUGE number of people who called this outcome dead-on ahead of time. To me and many others, it was obvious beforehand that we were lunging headlong into exacly the role Bin-Laden had hoped to provoke us into.
The MANY of us who predicted this ahead of time are not impressed by partisan finger-pointing.
To me and many others, it was obvious beforehand that we were lunging headlong into exacly the role Bin-Laden had hoped to provoke us into.
exactly! The Right likes to pretend as if EVERYONE was fooled by the faulty "intelligence" used to go to war, but MANY were not. MANY of us were yelling from the mountain-tops that this move was stupid, dangerous, and costly, but we were called "fanatics" "liberals" and "unpatriotic". I'd rather be unpatriotic and use foresight, than be blindly (and falsely) patriotic and rely on hindsight.
Hmmm... Give up Golf??????
1. How about providing better health-care for the veterans?
2. How about providing Mental Health care for our homeless Veterans, and the active duty soldiers who may soon follow.
3. How about sponsoring a National Charity Golf tournament for the family and children of those soldiers who are suffering financially and socially.
4. How about asking his war profiteering friends to dedicate 3 percent of their profits the veterans fund for 6 months
He will give up golf. Who is the elitist???
Excellent ideas.
Olbermann - Sean Hannity?
Olbermann = Glenn Beck?
Here's a question - how many of us are objective enough to catch all of the above and judge what they say not by who they are but whether it is true?
The difference is Olbermanns comments are often supported by facts.
Olbermann's comments are no better supported than Hannity's or O'Reilly's. Here's how it works. They decide what they want to say, then they have some little research assistant go out and find facts that support their statement.
Get a grip, people. Olbermann, O'Reillly, Hannity, Matthews--They are all a bunch of teleprompter-reading talking heads. None of them have any more knowledge than the rest of us. They say what they need to say to keep the ratings. Keeping the ratings keeps their jobs. They get paid big bucks and don't want to lose that.
I get such a charge out of this sometimes. The same people who complain about FOX being biased worship at the feet of Olbermann. Why? Cuz HIS bias agrees with theirs. I can think of no news commentator (notice the lack of the word "journalist") who is more biased than Olbermann.
O'Reilly is a brainless sap, whose non-existent facts are plainly obvious to even the moderately informed.
Those who have the misfortune to drop by to hear his mindless blubberings gain only the perspective that he is a genius compared to Hannity.
Olbermann has more intellect in his pinky than the two dweebs have in their hollow vessels.
You fail to see that they are opposite sides of the same coin? Intellect? Now, That is funny!!!!
"Here's how it works. They decide what they want to say, then they have some little research assistant go out and find facts that support their statement."
Isn't that the same way the Bush administration operates? At least Olbermann just fires verbal shots, rather than invading countries.
On a related topic, there's a priceless video on the web right now of Chris Matthews (yes, Tweety Bird -- God has a good purpose for every life form, I guess) making a total fool of an idiot talk show host by asking him to explain what Neville Chamberlain actually did. The guy had been defending Bush's implied comparison of Obama to Chamberlain for saying that he would negotiate with bad guys. Matthews finally managed to get the guy to stop gibbering long enough to explain to him that there's a difference between talking to someone and giving him half of Czechoslovakia. From the look on his face, he didn't even know what Czechoslovakia had to do with Chamberlain.
Check it out here:
Yes, that's the way the Bush administration operates. It's also the way every other politician operates.
c anderson, I was referring to the invasion of Iraq, and the upcoming invasion of Iran. It is NOT standard practice for a government -- not, at least, an allegedly democratically elected government of this country, to decide to invade a sovereign country and then cook the intelligence to come up with a casus belli. Possibly it's been done in the past (sinking of the Maine, Gulf of Tonkin etc.) but it's not legal or moral, and when it leads to military disaster it should be an impeachable offense.
Hetep and Respect Jimster, Bush gave up golf as his sacrifice.? What a lying sack of crap. I think Americans are as angry as Olbermann and Republicans will not carry one single state in November.
To say that is a little over the top, Aunk. I dislike the GOP as much as the next guy, but do you seriously expect them not to carry Texas, Idaho, Utah or West Virginia?
Hetep and Respect TheFunkyBunch, You have a point but I think, like Mohammad Ali said, November is going to shake up the world.
To say that is a little over the top, Aunk.
I thought about your words as I stepped out on this limb. I know I am swimming against the tide (Red/Blue State Model) However, there is something about the Obama revolution that is demonstrating to me that America will be purple in November.
Texas, Idaho, Utah or West Virginia?
Especially Texas, as it is the only way they can recover their good name.
As a 6th generation Texan I can guarantee you that Texas will not recover it's 'good name' but will continue it's time-honored traditions of intolerance, ignorance, revenge, racism and generally Mississippi-With-Highways mentality. McCain will carry the state with Travis County being the only county going to whoever his opponent turns out to be. 10% of the populace who still support Bush live in Texas and they are damned proud of it. No way @!$%#y woman or an alien Negro will EVER be elected in Texas, we got traditions to live up to here!
we got traditions to live up to here!
The word you were looking for was "prejudices" I believe.
-Dave
I live in a blue dot surrounded by a sea of Texas red. There were way more Obama signs than Hillary signs before the primary -- and no McCain signs. If only we could reverse the godawful district lines drawn by Tom 'the exterminator' deLay, so we could boot out our dreadful repub congressman!
Thanks for bring back those bad memories of losing my congressman thanks to 'the exterminator'
Oh, I never forget the work of the Texas Hammer; especially when they trot out those congress district maps that look like buckets of spaghetti. Where is old deLay these days and how has he managed to remain out of prison?
DeLay moved out of state did he not? Go figure...
You know from what I am reading, plenty of folks are pretty sick of politics as normal. Beside the highest power prices and home insurance rates in the nation, a campaign done correctly, just might turn Texas blue.
We used to be. In my lifetime--I guess I can hope eh?
Hetep and Respect ddog and folks, thanks for sharing your on the ground insight regarding Texas.
it's time-honored traditions of intolerance, ignorance, revenge, racism and generally Mississippi-With-Highways mentality.
This does not sound encouraging. Mississippi-with-Highways, dam.
DeLay moved out of state did he not? Go figure...
Here's a quote from his website: "He was responsible for developing the issues and policies that formed the Republican agenda." Sounds to me like that's an admission of guilt, at the very least on conspiracy charges.
Here's what he blames on "Democrat control" of Congress:
1) Consumer confidence plummeted;
2) The cost of regular gasoline soared to?over $3.50 a gallon;
3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);
To me, this suggests he now lives in Egypt -- the state of denial!
"3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);"
Huh? Is he trying to say it was -..-05% before? Is that even possible? Not one person unemployed?
If it was at 4.5%, a ten percent increase of that figure would be roughly five percent unemployment.
duh... teach me to type and talk on the phone at the same time...
Yeah, I'm not much of a multi-tasker either... ;)
Funky Bunch, Frank Rich made quite an interesting point today about the GOP's latest loss of a safe seat in a safe district, when Travis Childers won an interim election. This was a run-off election, because in the previous election in April, no candidate in the three-way race got a clear majority. Childers got 49% and the Republican candidate, Davis, got 46%. But this past week, Davis hadn't budged from 46%, while Childers got 54%. What happened in the interim? Why did the entire swing vote swing to the Democrat? Well, for one thing, President Bush, John McCain and Karl Rove all campaigned for Davis, and Dick Cheney made a personal appearance. For another, the state GOP ran some very negative ads trying to link Childers to Obama, and by extension with Rev. Wright. Oops, can you say "backfire?" Looks like maybe being associated with Obama does a candidate a lot more good than being associated with McBush.
Hetep and Respect trex, I think they said the Republican Brand is damaged. Bush still thinks he is the best thing since sliced bread and is likely to keep trying to help. The numbers you quote tell an important story, what a Democratic blessing.
Speaking of blessings did you hear about the Rev. Huckabee Obama gun incident.
I love Olbermann.
Me too.
These "Special Comments" are excellent examples of his writing abilities.
Yeah his delivery is over the top at times, but it is completely understandable given the realization the we have a callous dictator in the White House.
Every American should be so enraged.
I love how he speaks with passion.
He's got one camera for the setup...and then he turns...to the camera with the spit-screen. Then takes a breath or two as he calms down and turns back to the screen for the next setup.
This kind of anger being portrayed is a good cathartic thing that we may need as a country. I'm sure there will be several more that come along--maybe trying to top Olbermann.
The people who really deserve to do this kind of talking on-air are the soldiers, their families, Iraqis, people who were run out of their jobs because they tried to do them...not me. Probably not Olbermann, but he did put things starkly and clearly and hit the hard truths, and it was nice to hear.
I just felt like punching something afterward. Joyful punching. Not sure about that.
I'd be impressed if Keith Olbermann wasn't such a buffoon.
That's funny, because he is right and you are wrong. Maybe instead of trying to be impressed you should try to get educated. Ignorance is only bliss for the ignorant.
Yes, but he's our baffoon.
Who's yours?
Who's yours?
John's buffoons are George W Bush and Bill O
Buffoons all of them...
Dubya - Self-explanatory
Cheney - Still linking Iraq to 9/11 and special mention for poor marksmanship
Douglas Feith - see Tommy Franks assessment
Dana Perino - press secretary who didn't know what "Bay of Pigs" was
Rumsfeld - going to war with the army he had, not the one he wanted
Messrs. Chertoff and Brown - fumbled Katrina but made no waves
Gonzalez - Mr. Chairman, I'm a buffoon but I don't recall that meeting. Torture, anyone?
Wolfewitz - neo-con-man
Condi Rice - doormat extraordinaire
if Keith Olbermann wasn't such a buffoon
What makes him a buffoon? He has a pretty good education, legitimate journalism credentials and strings together some pretty sensible sentences. Compare that to some of the other TV faces.
What makes him a buffoon?
the fact that he doesn't join JohnRussell in being a NeoCon apologist.
JohnRussell in being a NeoCon apologist.
I don't have the honor of the acquaintance of said JR, but I suspect he is very busy in that role. There's a heck of a lot to apologize for!
Mars - clearly you have no idea who John is; name calling is childish and inflammatory. I note that rather than the community collapsing your comment in violation of the COH, they are voting you up.
Obama supporting newsviners - you are showing your lack of respect for newsvine and it's members as well as your prejudices.
Obama supporting newsviners - you are showing your lack of respect for newsvine and it's members as well as your prejudices.
So you're blaming all Obama supporters for a single incident of name calling? Be careful of the rock throwing, you're dangerously close to hitting your own house.
Mars - clearly you have no idea who John is
No, but I know what kind of person he plays on Newsvine. Someone who makes excuses for the Neo-Con agenda.
name calling is childish and inflammatory.
When someone who is a cheerleader for the Neo-Cons gets called a "Neo-Con apologist" it's not so much name calling, as it's calling that person out.
I note that rather than the community collapsing your comment in violation of the COH, they are voting you up.
That's because they agree with me.
Obama supporting newsviners - you are showing your lack of respect for newsvine and it's members as well as your prejudices.
What a crock of rhetorical bull@!$%#.
A) show me where what I said had ANYTHING to do with Obama.
B) tell me how I, somehow, represent ALL Obama supporters? Do you represent all Bush/Cheney enthusiasts? Thanks for @!$%#ing up our country and economy!!!! we owe you one!
Another great commentary! There is nothing wrong with a sense of righteous indignation. He speaks for many of us. And aside from this particular commentary, I find his sense of humor refreshing. There's so little of that going around.
A 'buffoon?' Maybe, according to your definition, but he has a platform many would (and probably do) envy.
Gooooo Keith!
There's nothing more bracing than a good, stiff dose of righteous indignation first thing in the morning, especially when delivered with that kind of passion and eloquence. I can even forgive Olbermann his sexist remarks about Hillary if he keeps up the attack on the Worst President In History.
I wasn't really familiar with this guy, but happened to be flipping by the channels and saw that tirade.
Gol Gol Goooooooooooool! Golazo!
Dead-nuts on target.
Favorite quote:
"Shut. The. Hell. Up.!"
Love it! If only he'd listen.
Olberman says the things so many are thinking and he puts it forth with passion, eloquence and a sardonic wit that cuts it right down to the bone. He may be seen as a blow hard to those on the far right, but O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Carlson and Hannity can't hold a candle to his abilities to write and deliver because Olberman knows he's on the right side of history.
His message is important, whether you like the man or not.
I read the Bush interview earlier yesterday and had about the same reaction as Keith - maybe not saying the word 'golf' quite as much, but it was definitely a fun watch! I'm so glad that someone is saying what really does need to be said.
Hell yes! I'm so glad that there are some people in the media who still have the guts to come out and say it like it is. Bush is such an idiot. And it is highly offensive that he even gave up golf in, "honor," of the war. It is still more offensive that he didn't even keep his promise for a month. I agree, "Shut. The. Hell. Up!"
I enjoyed Olbermann's special comments when nobody else had the courage to speak out and they were a little more thoughtfully written. While I agree with his analysis that Bush's narcissism has been one of the most destructive forces in American history, there comes a time when you do have to stop acting like a monkey. Everyone knows that Bush is toast, Bush is evil, etc., so let's try to detach with love and focus on actually doing something constructive. We've had our ventilation period, now comes the action period.
It is not certain that our action period will ever get off the ground, too many things have happened that I would have never believed possible.
We don't know how this awful and monstrous administration will proceed through the next few months and if they wont make a grab at dictatorship. Olbermann's comments merely articulate the frustration and disgust so many of us feel when each new vile Bushco stupidity flops out onto the world stage with all the charm of a maggoty corpse.
I sincerely hope that we can get through the next few months, elect Obama, and get on with our action period which will be dominated by trying to dig out from under the wreckage left from 8 years of GOP misrule and malfeasance.
See also this article and this response.
Bravo, Mr. Olbermann.
Well said.
Does anyone think he gave up golf because of how he was portrayed in Farenheit 9/11? (Remember the golf scene? It looked pretty bad). I think his advisors suggested that he not give more reasons for the media to jump on him. Just a thought... I think it may have contributed to this "honorable "decision.
I watched the video on YouTube and was amazed... I've never seen someone get that passionate in an opinion piece... not even O'Reilly vs. Geraldo or O'Reilly vs. Donahue evoked that kind of passion! Perhaps Olbermann and O'Reilly should cross over and do each other's shows. I want to see how red O'Reilly can get.
Good point. I hadn't actually thought about the 9/11 angle. Definitely possible if the timing fits.
Keith also said that Bush didn't actually quit playing when he said he did.
Pathological liar, that he is.
I don't watch much TV, so that was an eye-opener. Hell yeah. The guy is kind of an actor, but he said thoughtful things.
Nice to hear someone express the thoughts of MOST Americans- including many honest, hardworking Republicans.
Please, K.O.- Continue with the truths about O'Riley.
I don't know much about Olbermann, which is good because I was able to view his comment without reading bipartisan politics into it. In a word, his comment was brilliant.
Wow! Mr. Olbermann nails it...
I happened to be watching Keith's Countdown to No Ratings (Mark Levin's words giving credit where it's due) when he made these remarks. Keith is a very angry man who is able to read talking points from Daily Kos with just the right sneer on his face (that I personally would love to slap the glasses off of). Keith should be out campaigning hard for John McCain because with a President Obama in the White House Keith just might find himself with no raison d'etre---in other words OUT OF A JOB.
Watch the violence talk Lisaed. First warning.
Keith writes his own commentaries. He also is thinking exactly what a whole lot of other Americans (a majority) are thinking, anger included.
You do understand that your views are in the minority if Americans don't you? Not that that should change your views of course, but you needn't act as though the Keith's or the Marcos' of the world are lone crazies. They are expressing the views of the majority of American's
Read the polls.
My, my...so angry, Lisa.
this comment done by mistake. my apologies
Watch the violence talk Lisaed. First warning.
Jimster-20.1---violence talk?--A slap to the face from the charming conservative? I assure you--Keith would probably enjoy it. My goodness---jimster---ya got me shaking in my Nancy Sinatra boots....just because polls say majority of Americans are dissatisfied (not surprising with an unpopular war and economic downturn) does NOT in any way translate to the majority of Americans believe the hate filled trash spewing out of Keith Olberman's mouth each night...his ratings support my premise---NOT your's. Read the Nielsen ratings. oh, and by the way--keith is on the pay roll of Daily Kos. And PS - just what do you think you are warning me about?????
Lisa-
I always appreciate your opinions, but anyone from either side on the isle who writes of any kind of violence, even in a figuratively sense is not ok on my column.
There's plenty to pick at with this subject without have to slap anyone in the face and knock their glasses off.
No hard feelings, just a friendly reminder.
Thanks for commenting here today.
So Olbermann's ratings somehow make your views correct, Lisa?
You don't have to have a giant audience to be correct. What a silly, senseless argument, thanks for the laugh.
And anyone who listens to, reads and agrees with Coulter is in no position to comment about "hate filled trash." At least Keith has reality and facts, not just anger.
I agree with Jim...such violence from you. Blech.
Love it!!! Mr. Olbermann said what Americans feel and we thank him for it!!! Americans are angry at Bush and anger was the appropriate response to Bush's bull sh@$.
Mary-21.0--please....Mr. Olbermann does not speak for all Americans....far from it. If he did---he'd be producing much better ratings.
lisaed - Agree. Keith, although I enjoy his passion, his state of being is so hate filled in so many ways that he might need some help for his own good. I believe this emotion of hate is so energizing to him that it is frightful. President Bush just decided it was not appropriate to play golf when the military are engaged in two wars, that's it. To show such disrespect and plain ole bias to the president no matter who he is shows the cards he plays. Where was he when Clinton was running the show? A lot of nuggets during those 8 years. Nothing ever gets done effectively with the emotions Keith is showing except if you consider inciting a revolution a good way to deal with your views...
Mary-21.0--please....Mr. Olbermann does not speak for all Americans....far from it.
Heh... per the latest poll on Bush's job approval, he speaks for about three quarters of us... that's a significant majority.
he speaks for about three quarters of us...
Jim 21.3--heh...then too bad for Keith they're not watching Count Down.
I suspect though, he wouldn't trade ratings with Bush for all the tea in China...
Jim-21.5--actually--Bush's ratings are far better than Keith's----ya big silly.
"Shut the hell up" was good. "Get the hell out" would have been better.
Opieman is most upset about his stagnant ratings. If he doesn't move up the food chain soon he might get ate.
Then he could go to ESPN. No, wait MSNBC hired him after ESPN fired him....
Ahhhh, Stop whining as you know he is absolutely correct. His ratings are far ahead of FOX NOISE, BUSHED.............
Thank you, Mr. Olbermann, not only for what you said but for the passion with which you said it. Anger isn't a very pretty emotion, I know, and it's easy to piously condemn it. But I think honest anger is probably less corrosive than the cynicism and powerlessness so many of us have been feeling. We can't make this daft President end his dreadful war, but it felt good to hear some one speak the truth out loud. Very loud.
EllenR-282008 I'll second that.
It is sad that so many Americans still want to play partisan politics. If you look at the vast majority of those wagging their fingers and spouting rhetoric, they are Republicans who can no longer justify their irrational anger. They can no longer blame the Democrats for failed foreign policy or disastrous domestic policy.
When Clinton left office almost 8 years ago our country was in the best economic shape of the last century. When good ole George leaves office we will be in the worst economic condition. We are hated around the world and losing ground on the world economic stage as well as at home. No child is being left behind, because ALL of them are being left behind.
When Bush took office he had already planned to invade Iraq. So when he turned his focus from Osama Bin Laden to chase Saddam and his WMDs many people protested, including the Democratic minority of congress until they were literally bullied and called unpatriotic for not getting with the program. Sure they caved when they were taken aside one-by-one and talked to and it seemed the majority of the public wanted to invade. Many of us never thought it was a good idea but remained silent for fear of being labeled UN-American.
Thank you Mr. Olbermann for speaking what the "Silent Majority" is feeling.
The Bush/McSame Ten Commandments:
ONE: 'You shall have no other gods before Mammon'
TWO: 'You shall not make idols, but instead bow down at the temple of corporate wealth'
THREE: 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, you may substitue the term 9/11'
FOUR: 'Remember the Sabbath day, Texas Plays Oklahoma.'
FIVE: 'Honor your father and your mother, by sending 4000 soldiers to die to avenge the attempt on Daddy's life'
SIX: 'You shall not murder, get Blackwater to do it instead'
SEVEN: 'You shall not commit adultery, except to get in bed with big business'
EIGHT: 'You shall not steal ... at least not from the rich'
NINE: 'You shall not bear false witness, unless it's get us into war under false pretenses'
TEN: 'You shall not covet your neighbor's possessions, you may however covet their cheap labor and their oil
Exactly and thank you for that imput, the two are joined at the hip and I agree with all ten. Hypocrites and discraceful.
Thank goodness for Keith and his sheer honesty! Being someone from Houston that used to work for one of Bush's energy "buddies", I have seen first-hand the greed and sheer idiocy that occurs when it comes to their clan. Shrub (little Bush) has defamed us as a nation and as individuals, only to secure his retirement from the White House on the coattails of the energy and constructions giants. Does anyone notice that Halliburton/KBR won the reconstruction contract for the US in a no-bid process (Cheney's ex company). What about big oil? The Iraq debacle is distracting us from the 10s of billions in profit that the oil companies have enjoyed over the last few years, with no one asking the justification. Reagan proved that trickle-down economics hasn't worked. What about our national debt? Has anyone seen that lately? The current Republican regime is more interested in making us afraid of things than truly addressing them and fixing them. If we're afraid, all of the "buddies" will continue to reap profits, and all of the already-wealthy will continue to get wealthier with their large shares of stock options in the energy and construction sector. I'm quite sure that Don Evans has a seat waiting for Shrub when he flees the White House. And, I'm sure that Cheney will be moving to Dubai to the new headquarters of Hallliburton, conveniently relocated out of the United States. Keith, keep firing bombs over the fence at these mental fleas, as they need to realize that we're much smarter than they realize. And, if Cheney invites you to his next hunting trip, please decline!
